Afghanistan’s former president Hamid Karzai has once again called for girls and women to get an education.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Karzai said he had met with a number of women active in the field of education and discussed the necessity of girls’ education and higher education for the development and progress of society.

He once again called for the reopening of schools and universities for Afghan girls and said it was a vital issue for Afghanistan’s progress.

After coming into power, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) closed high schools and universities to girls in the country. Schools for girls, above grade 6, were closed in late 2021 and universities closed to women in December 2022.
