Members of Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of the Parliament) are calling for amendment in the structure and mandate of the electoral law, saying parliamentary elections may face challenges as long as IEC is not reformed.

The MPs on Saturday’s session demanded the new government to organize the parliamentary elections in accordance to the constitution.

Wolesi Jirga criticized Independent Election Commission’s performance during 2014 Presidential and provincial council elections and accused electoral members of the electoral deadlock.

They called on National Unity Government to begin measurements for the upcoming parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

Naeem Lalai Hamidzai, a member of the House said, “Elections will not be acceptable as long as the electronic ID cards are not issued and the electoral law is not revised”.

This comes as President Ahmadzai in a meeting with administrative staff of the House had said that distribution of electronic ID cards were at the top of his priorities.

According to the President, the Ministries of Interior and Telecommunications are not capable to distribute electronic ID cards, thus; this will be the job of the Presidential office.
