Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), met with Roza Otunbayeva, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of UNAMA in Kabul to discuss the needs of returnees, challenges faced by Afghan expatriates, progress in the country, private sector development, attracting investment, and other issues.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released on Thursday, Muttaqi emphasized the need to enable the Afghan government to address the problems of Afghans residing in Europe. He stated that by providing consular services, the human rights of Afghans living abroad should be protected.

Muttaqi also requested UNAMA to focus on realities in its reports so that the comprehensive progress and stability of the country can be accurately conveyed to the international community.

On the other hand, Roza Otunbayeva stressed that the United Nations stands with the people of Afghanistan. She added that UNAMA is working not only to facilitate the livelihoods of returnees but also to create an environment for investment and job opportunities in Afghanistan.

The UN representative noted that international aid has expanded beyond humanitarian assistance to development sectors as well, and information about Afghanistan’s progress and opportunities will be shared in upcoming Security Council meetings.

Both sides emphasized the importance of close and joint cooperation between the Islamic Emirate and UNAMA.
