The family of former Taliban leader Mullah Omar has declared allegiance to the group’s new leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement, the family announced their allegiance in a meeting, and vowed to follow instructions of the new Taliban chief.

“In a meeting Mullah Yaqub (Mullah Omar’s son) and Mullah Abdul Mannan (Omar’s brother) pledged allegiance to the new leader of Islamic Emirate, Mullah Akhtar Mansour,” a statement issued by the Taliban said without saying when the meeting was held.

Yaqoob and Manan had earlier refused to accept Mansoor’s leadership, who was elected as the group’s new head following the confirmation of Mullah Omar’s death in late July.
