Local officials in Herat province have announced that exports and imports through the newly-built Herat-Khaf railway connecting Afghanistan with Iran will begin in the next two weeks.

Mohammad Nasim Mohammadi, provincial railway director in Herat, said at a press conference that the transfer of commercial goods from Rozanak station on the Herat-Khaf railway line will begin in the next two weeks, according to a statement released by Afghanistan Railway Authority on Tuesday.

He added that in the next solar year, around 500,000 tons of commercial goods will be transported between Iran and Afghanistan along this railway line.

According to Mohammadi, traders can export or import their goods from Afghanistan to Iran’s Chabahar and Abbas ports and the Turkish border at a reduced tax.

In addition, in the coming spring, a passenger service between Iran and Afghanistan will also start.

Already, an Iranian company has said it will transport 100,000 tons of commercial goods and 100,000 passengers along this line in the first year.
