At least 81 armed Taliban militants were killed during the clearing operation to recapture the Kunduz province, sources said.

Afghan security officials have also accepted that the security forces have also suffered causalities but refused to present an exact figure.

Taliban militants, who mounted coordinated attacks on Afghanistan’s Kunduz province, have reportedly been defeated, and the fighting between the Islamists and government forces stopped  two days ago.

Taliban fighters earlier appeared to have breached the city, reportedly raising their flag in a central square.

In a major victory, Kunduz was briefly captured by the Taliban in September 2015 but government forces, backed by Nato, recaptured it within days.

Special forces have been flown in from Kabul to help repel the latest assault.

The fighting in Kunduz comes as the Afghan government officials, including Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, are at an EU-led conference in Brussels to seek financial support to rebuild their country.
