Afghanistan’s schools reopened across the country on Saturday in a trial following months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Private schools were allowed to reopen for all grades but government-run schools only opened for Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Education Ministry spokeswoman Najia Nuzhat said all schools have to comply with strict health guidelines in order to curb the spread of the virus and all students have to wear masks at all times.

As part of a proposed plan to reopen all lower grades at state-run schools, the health ministry is looking at rolling out mobile teams to monitor schools so as to ensure social distancing and good hygiene practices are adhered to.

Schools across Afghanistan have been closed for five months.
