Bayat Foundation launches urgent global appeal for Afghan quake victims
In response to Wednesday’s deadly earthquake that hit the south-eastern provinces of Paktika and Khost in Afghanistan, the Bayat Foundation launched an urgent international appeal for donations for the families of victims and survivors.
In addition to the appeal, the foundation also sent an ambulance, doctors and a trailer load of medical supplies to the area where they will set up a mobile clinic to help treat the injured.
According to Mariam Bayat, Chief Operating Officer for Bayat Foundation, the organization “mobilized and dispatched emergency humanitarian supplies as soon as we heard of the devastation to help feed, house, treat, and clothe affected families.”
She said however that “much more help will be needed in the days ahead, and we are ready to respond to help as many Afghans as possible.”
According to Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) officials, the death toll in Wednesday morning’s 6.1 magnitude earthquake has risen to over 1,000 in just two districts of Paktika province.
Bayat foundation’s appeal comes in response to widespread calls Wednesday by the IEA and the foreign community for assistance following what is the most devastating earthquake in at least 20 years.
