Civilian casualties highest in first half of 2016 – UN Report

A UN report published on Monday shows that 5,166 civilians causalities recorded in the first half of 2016.

The Human Rights team of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has documented 1,601 civilian deaths and 3,565 injured civilians which represents an increase of four percent in compare to the first six months of 2015.

One-third of these casualties recorded were children, the reported said.

The numbers were called shaking and shameful by the UN officials and war parties were urged to try their best to avoid civilian casualties.

The report has attributed 60 percent of these casualties to the government armed oppositions.

The total civilian casualty figure recorded by the UN between 1 January 2009 and 30 June 2016 has risen to 63,934, including 22,941 deaths and 40,993 injured.
