Hekmatyar changes his conditions for peace with Afghan gov’t

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has changed his key condition of US withdrawal from Afghanistan for peace with Afghan government.

Hekmatyar is the founder and the active leader of the Hezb-e Islami political party who is designated a “global terrorist” by the United States and blacklisted by the United Nations.

According to the Associated Press (AP), one of his envoy’s in Kabul who is seeking peace with Afghan government has said he has dropped his key condition for ending his war of more than 40 years.

Amini has said Hekmatyar is no longer demanding that all foreign troops leave Afghanistan.

“Departure of foreign troops is not a condition, it is a goal,” Amini has said to AP.

He is widely believed to live in Pakistan, though his supporters say he is in Afghanistan.

Hekmatyar is accused for the deaths of thousands of people during the devastating Afghan civil war and there are concerns over his extremist reputation and human rights abuses.

Reportedly, Hekmatyar’s representatives are to hold a third round of discussions with Kabul’s High Peace Council this week to reach a final agreement.
