New Pentagon Chief Ashton Carter visits Afghanistan
New US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter made his first unannounced visit to Afghanistan early this morning.
Carter plans to see American troops in Afghanistan, meet with both Afghan leaders President Ghani and CE Officer Abdullah Abullah and assess whether U.S. withdrawal plans are too risky to Afghan security.
According to reports he is expecting to hear President Ghani’s views on U.S. withdrawal plan and peace negotiations with Taliban.
Though currently Afghan security forces are struggling to secure the country on their own without the U.S. combat troops, but recently President Ashraf Ghani stated that the U.S. may “re-examine” their withdrawal plan from Afghanistan by 2016.
U.S. ended their combat mission in Afghanistan in December 2014 and scheduled to continue training and advising ANSF in Resolute Support mission till 2016, where all American forces may leave Afghanistan.
