Pakistan’s frontiers minister stresses ‘dignified’ return of Afghan refugees
Pakistan’s Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs Amir Muqam has stressed the importance of ensuring the dignified return of Afghan refugees to their country.
He said this during a visit to the Office of the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees Punjab in Lahore on Saturday, The Nation newspaper reported.
Muqam also met with a delegation from the Afghan refugee business community.
In October 2023, Pakistan announced a plan to repatriate illegal foreigners, giving a 30-day deadline for undocumented refugees to leave the country or be subject to deportation.
More than 500,000 Afghan refugees have been expelled so far.
Pakistan’s move has been criticized by human rights organizations which say it is a violation of refugee and international human rights law.
There are also reports of harassment in the process of repatriation.
