Salma Dam Project to be completed in Mid 2016 in Herat

Salma Dam located in western Herat province, is expected to be completed by mid-2016.

A number of Provincial officials, Indian consulate responsible have participated in the reservoir water ceremony on Saturday.

Indian consulate in western part of Afghanistan during a press release has stated that reservoir water will take one year time to be filled in.

Deputy provincial Governor of Herat Aseeluding Jami said,” there has been security issue since 2010 and the completion of the dam failed,we  are happy to see the dam is active now,for further reviewing  of the dam activities soon the provincial officials, Indian consulate responsible to revisit the water dam.”

According to the Indian Consulate in Herat province, the reservoir will be 20km long and 3.7km wide and has a storage capacity of 640mn cubic meters.

The major dam passed a critical stage on Sunday with closure of Diversion Tunnel Gate and work on filling of dam reservoir kicked off.

Salma Dam is one of the two big projects India undertook in Afghanistan, and building of Afghanistan’s parliament is the second big project of Indian Government.

The dam will not only produce power with a capacity of producing 42Mw but also to irrigate 80,000 hectares of land.

According to the Indian consulate press release, the following dam cost 300 million $ which is one of the most costly projects aided by the India Government in Afghanistan.
