Saudi Arabia’s authorities confirmed the death of Saudi’s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz at age 90.

King Abdullah, who has ruled Saudi Arabia since August 2005, has died after battle with pneumonia.

He is thought to have left behind four wives and many ex-wives, and around 30 sons and daughters.

Abdullah’s brother and crown prince, Salman, in a statement attributed to him on Saudi state television, announced the king’s death and that he had assumed the throne.

At the end of his reign, Saudi Arabia was a different country from the one in which he came to power — much more open to economic entrepreneurs, more receptive to public discussion of its many problems, and even courting tourists.
