UNHCR expects the population under its mandate to reach 131.2 million by year end, up from 129.4 million at the end of last year.
The NRC chief expressed concern over declining humanitarian assistance and a shortage of funding for the organization’s operations in Afghanistan.
The humanitarian situation has also been worsened by the return of nearly six million Afghans from neighbouring Iran and Pakistan since late 2023.
The meeting comes as the UN Security Council prepares to renew UNAMA’s mandate before its expiry on 17 June, alongside its quarterly briefing on Afghanistan.
