Trump says US could have won in Afghanistan if not for political interference

President Donald Trump claimed over the weekend that the United States could have secured victory in Afghanistan, but that political decisions undermined the war effort and ultimately prevented success.
Speaking at an event in Virginia commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy, Trump argued that the military’s ability to win was hampered by political constraints imposed during the two-decade conflict.
“You know, we stopped fighting to win,” Trump said. “We could have easily won. In Afghanistan, in any war, we could have easily been victorious, but politics got involved, and they said: take it slower.”
The president has repeatedly criticized the U.S. military’s handling of the war in Afghanistan, placing blame on generals for what he has described as a cautious and ineffective strategy. He has insisted that the U.S. had both the strength and resources to win, but lacked the political will to do so.
