Wolesi Jirga deputy speakers elected
Afghanistan Wolesi Jirga on Tuesday elected Zahir Qadir as the first deputy speaker and Nazir Ahmad Zai as the second deputy speaker of the lower house of Parliament.
Zahir Saadat the nominee for second deputy speaker of Parliament gained 41 votes and his rival Nazir Ahmad Zai with gaining 93 votes which constituted 50+1 votes of the House elected for the position of second deputy speaker.
In the result of the final round of Wolesi Jirga election Abdul Rouf Inami elected as the lower House secretary and Irfanullah Irfan elected as the deputy secretary of the Wolesi Jirga.
Abdul Rouf Ibrahimi, chairman of Wolesi Jirga said, “Mr. Nazir Ahmad Zai elected as the second deputy speaker of the lower house of Parliament with receiving 93 votes of confidence by representatives.”
Afghanistan assembly entered its fifth and last legislative year and voted to elect first and second deputy speakers, the secretary and his deputy.
Wolesi Jirga abbreviated WJ, is the lower house of the bicameral National Assembly of Afghanistan, alongside the House of Elders.
The House of the People is the chamber that bears the greater burden of law making in the country, as with the House of Commons in the Westminster model.
It consists of 249 delegates directly elected by single non-transferable vote (SNTV). Members are elected by district and serve for five years.
