EUPOL pledges to support, train Afghan Police
European Union reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting the Afghan National Police (ANP), but demands the Afghan government to return back the ANP to their main task.
According to a statement released by the office of the Chief Executive of Afghanistan, the CEO of Afghanistan, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met the head of the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL) Ms. Pia Stjernvall in his office on 04 April, 2016.
The EUPOL head of mission briefed Afghan leader about the EUPOL mission activities and stressed that EU will continue its support and finance to the Afghan National Police, the statement said.
At the same time, Ms. Stjernavall asked the Afghan government to return the ANP to their main task which is to serve as a single law enforcement agency all across the country and stated that the EU is ready to assist the Afghan government in this area.
EUPOL Afghanistan established in 2007 to support the reform efforts of the Afghan government in building a civilian police service. The Mission part of the EU’s long-term commitment and contributes to the EU’s overall political and strategic objectives in Afghanistan. The Council of the EU has extended the mandate of EUPOL Afghanistan until 31 December 2016.
