Hekmatyar’s party denies joining Islamic State
Hizb-i-Islami faction led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has denied reports that it had announced loyalty to Islamic State group in Afghanistan.
Haroon Zarghon, a spokesman for Hekmatyar faction has rejected a statement that had circulated in Afghan media last week about Hekmatyar, saying he has called on his followers to support the militant group Islamic State (IS) in the fight against the Taliban.
“It was not true. None of us had issued any such statement in support of ISIS in Afghanistan against the Afghan Taliban,” spokesman Haroon Zarghoon has said to Reuters.
Last week a statement released in Shahadat, a website related to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar faction, that the group has announced allegiance to Islamic State to support IS militants in the fight against the Taliban.
