In response to the adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution on appointing a new representative for Afghanistan, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said there is no need for a special envoy as Afghanistan is not involved in conflict or war.

Mujahid said that the war has ended in Afghanistan and stability and security have been established.

He stressed that the Islamic Emirate is against appointing a special envoy and considers the presence of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in the country sufficient.

Meanwhile, experts in the field of international relations also considered the existence of UNAMA in Afghanistan as sufficient and said that the appointment of a new representative by the UN will not have a positive impact on Afghanistan.

These experts added that if the goal of the UN is to interact with the IEA, it should pursue this issue through its office in Kabul.

Earlier, the US said that it supports such a mission and considers it beneficial to the Islamic Emirate.

The Security Council adopted the resolution requesting the Secretary-General to appoint a Special Envoy for Afghanistan in late December. At the time the UN said the new envoy needed “robust expertise on human rights and gender” issues.

The 15-nation Council voted 13 in favor to none against, with two abstentions – China and Russia.
