Afghanistan Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah says that the Taliban group has not yet start formal talks with the Afghan government, but setting pre-conditions for the peace process would not be acceptable for the Afghan government.

CEO noted that if Taliban takes political solutions, the Afghan government is ready to accept it as a part of the government.

“We are serious about a peaceful settlement. Pre-conditions for peace talks are not acceptable. The main point is that if Taliban renounce violence, it can be accept as a part of the Afghan government,” said CEO, Abdullah Abdullah.

He also emphasized that the armed Taliban group has divided to several parts after the death of Mullah Omar, Taliban’s former leader.

“Taliban are now different groups and different people represent them. They are not as united as were under Mullah Omar’s leadership. They have been divided to three or four groups and some of them contact with local officials of the government,” added CEO, Abdullah Abdullah.

This power struggle within the Taliban has raised questions about who would represent the group if and when the talks with the Afghan government restart.

Abdullah declared that the situation that has been made by Taliban and Al-Qaeda facilitate foreigners to come to Afghanistan and if Afghanistan has peace and stability, there is no need for the presence of foreign troops in the country.

“If Taliban is honest for peace, the best way is to come and cooperate for providing peace and security in the country and there will be no need for presence of foreign troops in the country,” said CEO.

The first round of talks brokered by Pakistan between representatives of the Afghan government and the Afghan Taliban concluded in Murree, with both parties agreeing to meet again.

Official efforts to reopen peace negotiations with the Taliban have so far borne little fruit, but informal talks have taken place in the recent past behind a veil of secrecy.
