Pakistan not act honestly in Peace Talks
The Executive Office of the National Unity Government (NUG) says that Pakistan has promised to subside Taliban’s summer offensive but acted contrary.
Spokesman of CEO noted that Pakistan has never stood by its commitments; adding “Pakistan has never been honest in Peace Talks process. We currently are in war but this does not mean that we forget the Peace Talks process.”
It has been scheduled that the second round of peace talks between representatives of the Taliban and an Afghan government delegation would restart after the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
However, renewed and intensified terror attacks in Kabul and other provinces compelled the Afghan government to put a screeching halt to the peace process.
It remains to be seen whether the talks will have any impact on the conflict, now nearing the 14-year mark. Even as meetings have taken place in various countries, the Taliban has mounted fierce offensives across Afghanistan and dispatched suicide bombers to attack government officials and symbols of official power in Kabul and elsewhere.
Many Afghans, including powerful political and military figures, remain suspicious of Islamabad and its motives. The Pakistani military and intelligence services have long been viewed in both Afghanistan and Pakistan as the godfathers of the Taliban, nurturing it as a proxy and providing haven to its leadership.
This comes as Paksitani chief of army staffs, Gen. Rahil Sharif said, “Peace is vital for the region, but faced obstacles. Peace in Afghanistan as a liaison between the region and China, Pakistan would also benefits.”
Pakistan hosted the first round of Taliban peace talks in July, but a planned second round was indefinitely postponed after the Afghan government announced that the Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, had died years earlier.
