Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has arrived in Doha on one-day official visit to Qatar in a bid to revive Afghanistan Peace Talks process.

During his visit, the army chief will hold talks with Qatari leadership on key issues focusing on restarting the Afghan peace process, sources said.

The visit is seen as crucial as it comes a day before the next round of the quadrilateral meeting in Kabul that is likely to set a date for talks with Taliban groups and Hizb-e-Islami.

The Taliban made the declaration in a summary emailed by spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid of a statement it made during unofficial, closed-door talks taking place in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Calling itself the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,” the group also laid out a series of demands including the release of an unspecified number of prisoners and the removal of senior members from a U.N. blacklist. It described the demands as “preliminary steps needed for peace.”
