Taliban new leader calls for unity in first audio message
Mullah Akhtar Mansoor who was introduced as the Taliban’s new leader following the death of Mullah Mohammad Omar, the supreme leader and founder of Islamic Emirate of Taliban in 1996, has issued his first audio message calling for unity.
Death of Mullah Omar was confirmed in a statement on Friday by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
On an audio massage related to Mansoor, the new leader of Taliban promises to continue his group’s fight. He says processes such as peace talks are propaganda campaign by the enemies.
This statement has cast doubt on whether the new Taliban leadership is interested in peace talks with the Afghan government or not.
Currently Mansoor is called as the supreme leader of Taliban after his successor, but reports suggest a large number of Taliban leaders have opposed appointment of Mansoor.
