UN Envoy Calls on Warring Parties in Afghanistan to Halt Fighting During Ramadan
In a statement, issued on Sunday on the occasion of Ramadan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan hopes that “the observance of Ramadan will provide an opportunity for all communities in Afghanistan to come closer together”.
In addition, Yamamoto said that Ramadan is “a special time of prayer and reflection for Afghans, as well as a time to show compassion for those most affected by the conflict in the country”.
“The UN family in Afghanistan remains committed in its stand with the Afghan people in their quest for a peaceful, united and prosperous Afghanistan,” he said.
Recently, the Afghan government held a five-day Consultative Loya Jirga on Peace in which more than 3,000 people participated from across the country.
The participants of the gathering in a resolution called on the Afghan government and Taliban to announce a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan but the insurgent group rejected the request, saying the fighting has more reward during the Ramadan.
