UNICEF confirms deaths of four earthquake-affected children from cold in Afghanistan
UNICEF previously warned that nearly 270,000 earthquake-affected children in northern and eastern Afghanistan face heightened risks as winter sets in.
Four children affected by the recent earthquake in Kunar province have died from extreme cold, UNICEF’s Representative in Afghanistan, Tajuddin Iwalay, confirmed this week.
In a statement, Iwalay expressed deep regret over the deaths, which occurred in the “Zari Baba” camp in Nurgal district. He said the children succumbed to severe winter conditions and illnesses that could have been prevented with adequate support.
He urged humanitarian organizations and international partners to urgently scale up assistance for families impacted by the earthquake, stressing the immediate need for life-saving winter supplies to protect vulnerable children.
