The World Bank has started work on about 200 projects, of various sizes, in Herat province, local officials confirmed.

Officials said the projects once complete will cost a total of over 300 million afghanis (AFN) and include the construction of small dams, water reservoirs, and road works.

Water canals, culverts, and retaining walls are also among the projects.

Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the governor of Herat, said the situation in the country is ready for investment. Because of this, efforts are being made in the western region to resume work on macro-economic projects.

He also said these projects are creating jobs for thousands of people.

Local officials said construction on small dams and reservoirs is of critical importance to the province.

While work was started on some projects 18 months ago, the “social livelihood” project, by which the program is known, has been rolled out across many villages, providing jobs to locals.

In addition, the World Bank is trying to complete half-finished projects in Afghanistan, the governor of Herat said.
