At least twelve Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed in an insider attack in Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province, authorities said.

The incident happened last night at a security outpost in Zakhil AKhondan area of Kunduz City.

Regional police commander Shir Aziz Kamawal said a total of 14 soldiers were assigned in the outpost to keep the security and respond to the Taliban’s threats.

According to Kamawal, last night two soldiers have gunned down their colleagues and then they have fled the scene along with the victim’s weapons and ammunition.

The individuals who have betrayed their colleagues are residents of Takhar and Jawzjan provinces, he added.

An Army official told Ariana News that they have assigned a delegation to investigate the incident.

A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed in a statement that the outpost was overrun by their militants, killing 13 soldiers, seizing some weapons.

Insider attacks also called as “green-on-green” attack, where one of the Afghan security personnel turn their weapons on another colleague, is one of the major challenges threatening the Afghan security forces.
