President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday began consultation with Jihadi and political leaders over the distribution of electronic ID cards.

The Presidential Palace says that President Ghani will soon issue a decree on starting the process of distributing electronic ID cards after a national consensus.

“President Ghani begins talks with Jihadi and political leaders on distribution of electronic ID cards which in a national consensus solve the problem and the process of distribution starts,” Sayed Zafar Hashemi, deputy spokesman of President said.

In the meantime, the chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani says that the distribution of electronic ID cards is an essential need.

Nuristani declares that people should not expect transparent elections till the electronic ID cards not distributed.

“The electronic ID cards are the priority of a transparent election and we will not witness a transparent election until this issue not solved,” head of IEC said.

It has been said that one of the controversial issues about electronic identification cards was the controversy on mentioning the name of various ethnic groups.

Some stressed on mentioning the name of ethnic groups but some emphasized that the word “Afghan” should be use for all Afghan citizens.
