NUG should act on commitments to reform electoral system: TEFA

The transparent election foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) on Thursday said that the National Unity Government (NUG) should act as its commitments to reform the electoral system.

One of the basic principles of agreement made in national unity government was the reform of Afghanistan electoral system.

Naeem Ayoub Zada, head of TEFA said, “The decision process of national unity government takes long time. It the authorities do not start reforming the electoral system, the electoral commissions would not have Legitimation.”

Four months passed since the formation of national unity government but no practical step has been taken for the reforming of electoral commissions.

TEFA concerns over the long period of making decisions in the new government and said that if the current situation continues, the government will have no achievements in reforming the system.

TEFA is said to consider the lack of reform in electoral system is causing stagnation of election and voting in Afghanistan.

“However, government authorities show themselves unite, we urged them to start reforming electoral system. The slightest negligence will cause the waste of time.” Ayoubi added.

In the meantime, head of the independent election commission (IEC) said he has done nothing wrong and he will not resign.

The government’s position in reforming the electoral system is still unclear.

The executive office is repeatedly emphasizes on reforms but has taken no practical steps so far.
