The 20th Asian Games opened in Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday with a colourful ceremony, as more than 11,000 athletes from across Asia gathered for the continental sporting event.

Emperor Naruhito officially declared the Games open after watching the parade of athletes representing 45 countries and regions. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry was also among the dignitaries attending the ceremony.

The Games, which run through October 4, feature competition in 41 sports. Afghanistan is represented by 34 athletes competing across eight sporting disciplines.

Four Afghan athletes — Mohammad Jafar Soltani, Shahzada Safi, Mohammad Khalid Hotak and Hamid Ashrafi — are scheduled to begin their campaigns in wushu on Sunday.

The opening ceremony marked Japan’s return to hosting a major multi-sport event with spectators after the Tokyo Olympics five years ago were held without fans at venues because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani said the athletes represented the role sport can play in promoting peace and friendship.
