Afghan government has appointed Asadullah Omarkhail as the new governor for northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan, governmental spokesmen announced on Monday.

Jawid Faisal, deputy spokesman to the Chief Executive of Afghanistan says the appointment of Mr. Omarkhail as the new governor of Kunduz was the joint decision of the National Unity Government leaders.

Adding, Omarkhail is one of the six nominees, Kunduz residents suggested to NUG leaders for the position.

After the Kunduz province collapsed to the hands of Taliban, the province was managed by acting-governor.

Capturing Kunduz was the most important victory for the Afghan Taliban since their regime was ousted by US-led forces in late 2001.
