KP CM Gandapur says can’t travel to Afghanistan due to blocked passport

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur revealed on Wednesday that his passport has been blocked since May 9, 2023, preventing him from traveling to Afghanistan for peace talks with the Islamic Emirate.

The disclosure followed a public call by PTI founder Imran Khan, who urged Gandapur via social media to engage Afghan officials to address mutual security concerns.

Gandapur said he tried to renew his passport, but authorities denied it due to his alleged involvement in last year’s May 9 protests.

“My requests for meetings with the PTI founder in jail are being declined. They [authorities] do not allow me to meet him, but let this message reach Mr Khan through the media that I will go to Afghanistan without a visa if Khan orders so,” he said.

He said he wanted to formally speak to the members of the Islamic Emirate about peace and security and that it was still being worked upon.

Gandapur, however, said it was beyond the provincial government’s mandate to hold national level talks with Afghan authorities.

AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 postponed amid regional disruptions

The competition, originally scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, subject to approval by FIFA.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027, moving the tournament to December 2027 and January 2028 because of regional developments that have caused logistical challenges and travel disruptions.

The competition, originally scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, subject to approval by FIFA.

The decision followed discussions between the AFC, the tournament’s Local Organising Committee and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF).

The AFC said exceptional circumstances affecting preparations and the delivery of the tournament had prompted the change, which was made in the interests of participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.

The governing body did not provide further details about the specific regional disruptions behind the decision.

The AFC thanked Saudi Arabia’s football federation and the organising committee for their continued commitment to hosting the competition.

It also said it would work with participating national associations, sponsors, broadcasters and commercial partners to minimise the impact of the revised schedule.

The tournament will remain in Saudi Arabia, with further updates to be communicated through the AFC’s official channels.

US lawmakers urge Trump administration to halt Afghan deportations

Rights organisations say the policy risks exposing vulnerable people to persecution and undermining international refugee protections.

Sixty-six US lawmakers have urged President Donald Trump’s administration to stop the planned deportation of Afghans, including former allies who worked alongside American and coalition forces before the 2021 withdrawal.

In a letter sent Monday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, lawmakers cited reports that at least 150 Afghans were due to be transferred from detention facilities in Louisiana to Pakistan from Tuesday.

They warned that returning Afghans to the region could expose them and their families to persecution because of their links to the former Afghan government and US forces.

“Our country made a promise never to abandon the Afghans who sacrificed their own and their family’s safety to stand with American service members,” the lawmakers wrote.

Human Rights First confirmed that a flight carrying some of the detainees from Alexandria, Louisiana, to Pakistan was scheduled for Tuesday.

Advocacy groups say many of those facing deportation have struggled to challenge their removal in court because they lacked legal representation. Some previously served in Afghanistan’s security forces or worked with US personnel.

The deportations come amid the Trump administration’s wider immigration crackdown, which has included agreements with at least 35 countries to accept migrants deported from the United States.

Rights organisations say the policy risks exposing vulnerable people to persecution and undermining international refugee protections.

More than 120,000 Afghans were evacuated during the 2021 US withdrawal. Many were initially admitted to the United States under humanitarian parole and later received temporary protection while seeking permanent immigration status.

However, lengthy immigration backlogs have left thousands uncertain about their future.

Afghan advocacy groups are urging Congress to introduce legislation restoring protections for Afghans who assisted US forces and remain at risk of persecution if returned to Afghanistan.

Iran is preparing to host a new four-country meeting on Afghanistan in the coming months, as regional powers continue diplomatic consultations on Afghanistan’s security, political situation and future cooperation.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei announced the plan during his weekly press briefing on Monday, November 2.

Baghaei said Tehran was making preparations for the meeting and had already conducted diplomatic visits as part of the process. However, he did not disclose the participating countries, the exact date or the proposed agenda.

Previous meetings under this format have involved Iran, Russia, China and Pakistan, with discussions focusing on regional security, counterterrorism, economic cooperation and engagement with Afghanistan’s current authorities.

The latest ministerial-level meeting among the four countries was held in New York on September 25, 2025, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The participants called for stronger regional cooperation, counterterrorism coordination, humanitarian assistance and greater economic engagement with Afghanistan.

The proposed meeting comes amid continued regional diplomatic initiatives on Afghanistan. Russia hosted the eighth Moscow Format consultations on October 5, 2026, bringing together representatives from Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and several Central Asian countries.

Discussions at the Moscow meeting covered regional security, counterterrorism, narcotics, humanitarian assistance and economic cooperation.
