Despite monsoon rains in Delhi, thousands of cricket fans took to the streets on Thursday to welcome home their national team after they won this year’s ICC T20 World Cup.

Exuberant fans followed them despite monsoon showers and heavy security deployment before Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the red carpet for a breakfast meeting with the team, Times of India reported.

Holding placards congratulating their favorites and waving the national flag, fans braved the weather to wait outside the airport.

One fan said: “We have waited for this moment for the past 13 years. The team has made us proud by winning the World Cup.”

The team had been delayed in Barbados for a few days as Hurricane Beryl forced the shutdown of the airport. Eventually India’s cricket board, the BCCI, chartered a flight to get the team home.

After greeting fans at the airport, the team traveled in buses to the prime minister’s residence.

Team India on Thursday expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hosting the T20 World Cup winners at his residence in New Delhi.

After their meeting, players took to social media, thanking the Modi for hosting them.

Virat Kohli said: “What a great honor meeting our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji today @narendramodi. Thank you sir for inviting us to the Prime Minister’s residence.”

Jasprit Bumrah said: “It was an honor to be invited to our honorable Prime Minister’s residence this morning. Thank you so much for your warmth and hospitality sir.”

Suryakumar Yadav wrote: “Honored to have met our esteemed Prime Minister, as World Champions.”

Yuzvendra Chahal said: “Humbled to meet honorable PM Shri Narendra Modi Sir along with the entire team. Thank you Sir for your encouraging words, means a lot to all of us.”

Axar Patel wrote: “Honored to present our World Cup win with the Prime Minister! This victory is for every Indian.”

Rishabh Pant stated: “Pleasure meeting the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modiji sir.”

Hardik Pandya wrote: “Such a privilege to meet our honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji. Thank you for hosting us sir.”

The players were due to fly to Mumbai on Thursday afternoon for an open bus victory parade followed by a ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium.

New Zealand cruise past Afghanistan by five wickets in T20 World Cup

Despite the strong batting display, Afghanistan struggled to contain New Zealand’s deep and aggressive batting lineup.

New Zealand produced a confident all-round performance to defeat Afghanistan by five wickets, chasing down a target of 183 with 13 balls to spare in their first match of the T20 World Cup in India’s Chennai on Sunday.

Afghanistan, batting first, posted a competitive 182 for 6 from their 20 overs, built around a powerful knock from Gulbadin Naib, who top-scored with 63 off 35 balls. Naib’s innings, laced with clean hitting and smart placement, gave Afghanistan much-needed momentum after a mixed start. Contributions from Rahmanullah Gurbaz (27) and Sediqullah Atal (29) helped steady the innings, while late runs pushed the total beyond the 180 mark.

Despite the strong batting display, Afghanistan struggled to contain New Zealand’s deep and aggressive batting lineup.

New Zealand’s chase was anchored by Tim Seifert, who set the tone at the top with a fluent 65 off 42 balls, attacking both pace and spin with ease. Although early wickets fell, Glenn Phillips swung the match decisively with a blistering 42 off 25 deliveries, keeping the required run rate firmly in check.

The middle order ensured there were no late jitters, with Daryl Mitchell (25 not out) and captain Mitchell Santner (17 not out) calmly guiding the team home in 17.5 overs, finishing at 183 for 5.

Afghanistan’s bowlers found moments of success, particularly Mujeeb Ur Rahman, but were unable to apply sustained pressure as New Zealand consistently found boundaries during key phases of the chase.

Afghanistan will face South Africa in their next match on Wednesday.
