Officials at Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health have previously stated that maternal mortality has declined in recent years.
UNFPA added that improving access to skilled midwives is key to ensuring safer pregnancies and addressing persistent gaps in healthcare services for women and children.
As a result, more than 420 health facilities have closed or suspended operations since early 2025, leaving around three million people without access to basic healthcare.
In a statement posted Tuesday on X, UNFPA stressed that the funding shortfall puts hard-won gains in reducing maternal mortality at serious risk.
