US Department of State says that Pakistan can have a direct role in regional stability and fighting against insurgent group.

“We believe that Pakistan can directly contribute to regional stability by acting against militants on Pakistani soil who seek to attack its neighbors,” said John Kirby, spokesman for the US Department of State.

Kirby calls terrorism a joint threat for all countries, including Pakistan.

“It is not the first time that the people of Pakistan have fallen victim to terrorism. Many soldiers have died, many civilians have died. This isn’t some theoretical exercise for the Pakistani people; it’s right there. Not in their backyard, in their front yard.

He said that the United States supports efforts against terrorist groups.

“We remain committed to supporting the Government of Pakistan in its efforts to end the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism and to promote peace and stability. And it is a regional issue. We’re going to continue to work with regional countries, regional partners, to deal with this because it is a common threat to everybody. And it requires common, comprehensive, collaborative solutions. And that’s what we’re going to continue to seek,” Kirby added.

In the last few years, the US-led NATO powers have continuously insisted that Pakistan to ‘do more’ against the militancy in the tribal areas in order to stop cross-border terrorism in Afghanistan. In this regard, the former high-level officials of the US government have accused Pakistan’s Army and ISI of close contact with the Haqqani network.

It is notable that Pakistan has backed stability and peace in the region, as its civil and military officials including diplomats have pointed out on in various global and regional forums.

In short, Pakistan is a key player in any realistic regional approach and holds the key for any reconciliation to be effective.
