Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday slammed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister’s plan to send a delegation to Afghanistan for talks over security problems, calling the remarks “poisonous.”

Speaking at Pakistan’s parliament, Asif said that provinces cannot directly engage in negotiation with any other country, as it is tantamount to direct attack on the federation.

“Statement of Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur is poisonous, province cannot engage directly,” Asif said.

Gandapur said on Wednesday that he would send a delegation to Afghanistan, criticizing that no one is giving importance to it despite being a neighbor.

He is a member of the party of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, and has repeatedly criticized the federal government’s policies.

Pakistani officials have repeatedly claimed that attacks in the country are orchestrated in Afghanistan, but the Islamic Emirate has denied the claim, saying Afghanistan is not responsible for Pakistan’s “security failure”.
