UNAMA chief visits Kandahar to discuss alternatives to farming poppies

Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, met with officials in Kandahar to discuss alternate crops for farmers who previously grew poppies.
Kandahar’s media and information office said Otunbayeva met with the deputy governor of Kandahar during her visit to the southern province.
In the meeting she said the United Nations had provided humanitarian aid to 26 million Afghans last year and is trying to increase the level of aid this year.
The deputy governor spoke about the improved security situation in Afghanistan and said the UN should work to encourage investors to invest in Afghanistan.
He also called for practical actions by the United Nations regarding the alternative cultivation of poppies for drugs and for help with the treatment of drug addicts in this province.
