No efforts by US to recognize IEA: White House

Published

on

There are no efforts by the United States government to recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), White House national security spokesman John Kirby said on Monday.

Kirby said this in a press briefing in response to a question whether the upcoming international meeting on Afghanistan in Doha is a move to normalize IEA.

“Officially, we’ve said — we’ve said it numerous times: If they want to be seen as legitimate rulers, they need to meet all the commitments that they said they would meet and make. And they haven’t done that,” Kirby said.

He added that nothing has changed about US policy when it comes to the IEA.

This comes as IEA officials have said that they are already eligible for recognition by the international community.

The two-day meeting of special representatives for Afghanistan will begin next Sunday in Doha.
