The United States military personnel remain postured outside Afghanistan to address threats that may arise from inside Afghanistan, US President Joe Biden said in a letter to Congress on Thursday.

The letter is sent as part of Biden’s efforts to keep the Congress informed about deployments of United States Armed Forces equipped for combat.

“United States military personnel remain postured outside Afghanistan to address threats to the United States homeland and United States interests that may arise from inside Afghanistan,” Biden wrote.

He said that the ongoing operations, which the United States has carried out with the assistance of numerous international partners, have been successful in seriously degrading ISIS capabilities in Syria and Iraq. 

Recently, the US State Department in its annual terrorism report said that al-Qa’ida elements, ISIS, and regionally focused terrorist groups remained active in Afghanistan.

“While the Taliban (the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) committed to preventing terrorist groups from using Afghanistan to conduct attacks against the United States and its allies, its ability to prevent al-Qa’ida elements, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, and ISIS-K from mounting external operations remained unclear,” the report said.

IEA has repeatedly said that it is committed to preventing Afghanistan soil from being used against any other country.
