Pakistani politician says his efforts to improve Afghanistan relations watered down

The politician warned that deterioration of relations with Afghanistan is not in the interest of his country.

Fazl-ur-Rehman, head of Pakistan’s Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) party, has said that he made efforts to improve relations between Kabul and Islamabad, but they are now being watered down.

The politician warned that deterioration of relations with Afghanistan is not in the interest of his country.

“I made my efforts to improve Afghanistan-Pakistan relations and I say with full confidence and in front of everyone that we returned with success (from Afghanistan). We opened the way for cooperation between the two countries in all sectors. Now these efforts are watered down. Why? For whose pleasure? For the benefit of Pakistan? Definitely not,” he said in a press conference.

Fazl-ur-Rehman visited Kabul in January and met with the officials of the Islamic Emirate. He asked the governments of both sides to put an end to their tensions and solve the existing problems through diplomatic means.

Islamabad claims that attacks in Pakistan are orchestrated in Afghanistan, but the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) denies this, saying it is not responsible for security failure of Pakistan.

Tajik authorities say their border guards clashed with militants who crossed into Tajikistan’s Khatlon region from Afghanistan on Tuesday night.

Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security said in a statement that militants intended to carry out an armed attack on one of the border outposts.

Three militants were killed and two Tajik soldiers died in the clash. From the scene, three firearms—an M-16 rifle and a Kalashnikov assault rifle—three foreign-made pistols equipped with suppressors, ten hand grenades, one night-vision device, explosives, and other military equipment were seized, according to the committee.

This was the third reported attack from Afghanistan into Tajikistan in the past month, with the previous ones targeting Chinese nationals.

The Islamic Emirate previously said it assured Tajikistan it was ready to tighten border security and conduct joint investigations.
