Storms in eastern Afghanistan leave at least 35 dead and 230 injured

The Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, has expressed his condolences to the affected families of the deceased and said various departments have been ordered to assess the damage, help transport the injured to hospitals, and arrange shelter and food for the affected families.

Heavy rains and hail have left at least 35 people dead and over 230 injured in Jalalabad city and surrounding districts, in Nangarhar province on Monday.

Officials from Nangarhar’s department of information and culture confirmed the death toll and said the bodies and the injured people have been taken to Nangarhar Central Hospital and to Nangarhar Provincial Hospital.

Early reports indicate at least 400 houses have been destroyed and heavy financial losses have been incurred to local residents and business owners.

Officials have however said these figures could rise.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, has expressed his condolences to the affected families of the deceased and said various departments have been ordered to assess the damage, help transport the injured to hospitals, and arrange shelter and food for the affected families.

Mujahid said the security forces have also been sent in to assist.

Afghanistan’s Embassy in Tokyo to suspend operations

The Embassy of Afghanistan in Japan, currently run by diplomats of the previous government, has announced that it will suspend its operations in Tokyo after the end of January 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, the embassy said the decision was made after consultations with Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in close coordination with Japanese authorities, and in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The embassy added that after January 31, all of its political, economic, cultural, and consular activities will be halted until further notice.

Currently, Shaida Abdali is serving as Afghanistan’s ambassador to Japan.
