A Russian court has sentenced a 23-year-old Afghan national to three years in prison for stabbing a local resident in the Siberian city of Omsk, Russian media reported.

According to the court ruling, the incident occurred last summer on Lenin Street, where the Afghan man, acting out of hooligan motives, stabbed a 26-year-old Omsk resident in the stomach during an altercation. The conflict reportedly began when the victim attempted to defend several young women who were being aggressively approached by the attacker.

After the stabbing, the suspect attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by police. A folding knife believed to have been used in the attack was seized during a body search.

The court noted that the defendant fully admitted his guilt, and paid the victim 700,000 rubles in compensation for the harm caused.
