The ministry also warned of strong winds in central provinces, particularly around the Salang passes, with speeds expected between 50 and 90 kilometers per hour.
At Kuji Port in Iwate, a 70-centimeter tsunami was recorded, while Hokkaido observed waves of 50 centimeters in Urakawa Town and 40 centimeters at Mutsuogawara Port.
"As of August 18, 20 people died as a result of the emergency incident," the local emergency service headquarters said in a post on Telegram.
